Cedar Point, already known for great wings thanks to its ultra-popular GateKeeper wing coaster, will be home to wings of the edible kind when the park opens a new Quaker Steak & Lube restaurant in 2015.
The restaurant will be located in what is currently T.G.I.Fridays, replacing that eatery. The Award-Winning casual-dining franchise Quaker Steak & Lube is known for its Best Wings USA and more than 25 sauces that come in a full range of flavors from Louisiana Lickers to Triple Atomic. In addition to Award-Winning chicken wings, The Lube also features specialty salads, burgers, ribs and an extensive kids’ menu. Legendary desserts and a full-service bar round out the entire dining experience. Founded in 1974 and built in an abandoned gas station in Sharon, Pa., Quaker Steak & Lube has expanded to 60 locations throughout the United States and Canada. The compelling décor, including race cars suspended from the ceilings, motorcycles, Corvettes and motor-themed memorabilia, combined with its craveable food and SuperCharged events, has created a cult-like following for The Lube for 40 years. “Quaker Steak & Lube will be a great addition to our restaurant lineup,” stated Chris Miller, vice president of food and beverage for Cedar Point. “Our goal is to provide our guests with the best food options during their visit to Cedar Point and adding an outstanding restaurant like Quaker Steak & Lube helps us accomplish that.” The new restaurant will be located adjacent to Castaway Bay indoor waterpark/resort, and is scheduled to open in May, 2015. SANDUSKY, Ohio (Sept. 18, 2014) – Cedar Point, The Roller Coaster Capital of the World!®, will introduce a dynamically new riding experience when it unleashes Rougarou™ in the spring of 2015! Named after a terrifying werewolf-like creature in French folklore, Rougarou [roo-guh-roo] feeds on screams and lurks in and around the swampy lagoon at the center of the park, shared with other coasters like Iron Dragon and Top Thrill Dragster. Rougarou’s floorless trains will take riders on an epic journey at speeds reaching 60 mph as their feet dangle just inches above the track and the murky waters below. The trains will be manufactured by Bolliger & Mabillard, Monthey, Switzerland, the same team behind rides like Raptor and GateKeeper, and will transform the ride experience dramatically while utilizing the structure and track of the former Mantis roller coaster. The ride begins with a climb to the top of the 145-foot-tall first hill, providing amazing views of the Cedar Point skyline. After reaching the apex, the trains will make a 180-degree turn to the right and plummet 137 feet, at a 52-degree angle, to within inches above the water. Thrill-seekers caught in Rougarou’s grasp will then be flipped upside-down by a 119-foot-tall vertical loop, spun around a 103-foot-tall dive loop, whipped around a highly-banked 360-degree turn and then twisted upside-down again by the world’s only inclined loop on a floorless coaster, angled at a wicked 45 degrees. Just when guests think the ride is over, the steel beast will take them through a 360-degree flat spin, tight and twisty turns and a figure-eight finale. Riders must be 54” tall to ride Rougarou. “Rougarou is going to be a fantastic addition to our coaster lineup and our guests are going to love it,” said Jason McClure, vice president and general manager of Cedar Point. “With the swampy waters below, the vibrant colors of the supports and track, lighting and other effects, it will be a ride like no other at the park.” 2015 will also mark the debut of the newly-renovated Hotel Breakers. Located along the mile-long Cedar Point Beach, Hotel Breakers will complete its two-year transformation into the ultimate resort destination. Along with a new exterior, the modernized hotel will have a new entrance portal, classic interior finishes, newly-furnished and remodeled rooms with LCD TV’s, new furniture, bedding and décor, and many other amenities and offerings. Additional enhancements include a new Starbucks and the Surf Lounge bar inside the famous rotunda, widened exterior green space with panoramic views of Lake Erie and an outdoor water play area with zero depth entry and splash features. “We want to provide a well-rounded and complete vacation experience for our guests, and the enhancements at the Hotel Breakers will help them have just that,” said Jason McClure. “It will have a fun and fresh feel, is steps away from the park and it’s a great place to start new family traditions.” Other amenities include two pools and Jacuzzis, access to the Cedar Point Beach and Boardwalk, a gift shop, arcade, exercise room, three restaurants, Early Entry (access to some of the biggest rides and coasters before the park opens to the general public), discounted Cedar Point admission tickets, complimentary Wi-Fi and the comfort and convenience of staying right next to the rides and roller coasters of Cedar Point. Reservations for the 2015 season can be placed now online at cedarpoint.com/hotelbreakers or by phone at (419) 627-2106. The charming waterfront hotel first opened its doors in 1905 as the “largest and greatest hotel on the Great Lakes.” Known for its breathtaking views and cool summer breezes, Hotel Breakers has been an important part of any complete Cedar Point experience. Notable guests over the years have included celebrities such as sharpshooter Annie Oakley, comedians Abbott and Costello, composer John Philip Sousa and six U.S. presidents, including Franklin D. Roosevelt and Dwight D. Eisenhower. Located on a sandy peninsula along the shore of Lake Erie, Cedar Point has been named as one of the best amusement parks in the world by USA Today, TripAdvisor, The Travel Channel and more. Cedar Point’s amazing lineup of roller coasters has received top billing by CBS News, Time magazine, the Los Angeles Times and many more. SANDUSKY, Ohio (Sept. 2, 2014) – It’s the “last stand” for one of Cedar Point’s steel scream machines. Earlier today, the park announced that the Mantis roller coaster will soon give its final rides.
Mantis was billed as the tallest, fastest and steepest stand-up roller coaster in the world when it opened on May 11, 1996. Featuring trains that secure guests in a standing position, Mantis provides its passengers with a unique ride experience. Mantis was built by the same legendary manufacturers that brought guests the Raptor and GateKeeper roller coasters – Bolliger and Mabillard (B & M), Monthey, Switzerland. In its 18-year history, Mantis has given more than 22 million thrilling rides. “It’s time to say goodbye to one of the park’s coasters, and it’s certainly been a different kind of ride for our guests,” said Jason McClure, vice president and general manager of Cedar Point. “But we’re extremely excited about what the future holds here at the Roller Coaster Capital of the World™.” Guests still have time to give Mantis a “standing ovation” before it shuts down permanently on Sunday, October 19 at 8 p.m. Additional plans for the 2015 season will be announced at a later date. Press Release for Cedar Point. Cedar Fair is a leader in the world of amusement parks and it is striving to create leaders in the community.
It is being done through a program launched a year ago: FUNdementals of Leadership, a partnership between Cedar Fair and Bowling Green State University Firelands. Cedar Fair simply wants to be the entertainment of choice; the employer of choice and the investment of choice. They need leaders to help achieve all three goals. Bowling Green State University had the experts in its facility, such as industrial psychology and business writing, said dean William Balzer. It was a natural fit. “We are a college of the community," Balzer said. "We want to support our community in every way, including how do we help our business community.” One of the biggest businesses in Sandusky's community that BGSU Firelands students can benefit is Cedar Point. That included Thaddeus Rada, a BGSU Firelands student in the industrial/organizational psychology program who worked with Cedar Fair on the program to create a profile of employees who would excel in a customer service driven environment like Cedar Point, Balzer said. “What an opportunity we have to have our students work for a billion dollar company,” Balzer said. The program concept was green-lighted by Cedar Fair CEO Matt Ouimet. A well-trained employee provides customer service that makes a difference and helps make a company successful. “While we are famous for our roller coasters, the biggest impact on our guest experience comes from the interactions our guests have with our employees," Ouimet said. "The collective impact of these programs improves the guest experience as well as the employee experience.” Ouimet once was asked what keeps him awake at night. He replied sincerely it was the number of people whose livelihood Cedar Fair was responsible for. The program seems to be a step toward a good night's sleep. Duff Milkie, corporate vice president general counsel for Cedar Fair and Balzer both sit on the board for Firelands Regional Medical Center. They began to recognize there is leadership opportunity between the school and the amusement park operator that had never been explored, such as matching the university expertise to Cedar Point and Cedar Fair while offering real world hands-on experience to BGSU students and faculty. “We discovered we had something to offer each other,” said Craig Freeman, Cedar Fair vice president of administration. They created the Cedar Fair and BGSU leadership program and Freeman put the idea into practice with the pilot program at Cedar Point. Classes are half a day for five weeks at the Firelands campus. Some of the skills they are hoping to develop include problem solving, communication, working with multi-generational colleagues and coaching for performance. Positive feedback from Cedar Point employees and from department heads has convinced the company to roll out the program in all 11 of its parks. Training has already began for full-time managers and supervisors at Kings Island and Canada's Wonderland. Cedar Point Press Release

After arriving to the Soak City parking lot and the Magnum entrance we waited outside the gate. We entered the park around 4:30. Once entering the park Cedar Point had their new Crab Fries at Chickie's and Pete's, Coca-Cola Refresh and Yogurt Plus. Pipe Scream and Lake Erie Eagles were also open until 5:45 So..... What did we think? This Midway looks really nice, it was give a refreshed look and it was a lot of fun. We had a blast and cant wait to ride the new Gemini Midway rides this summer!!!!
In 3 minutes and 10 seconds, he was hooked. That was 22 years ago. More than 11,000 rides later — 11,290, to be exact, as of Oct. 13 — Henry Sievers still can’t get enough. “I knew it was fast,” Sievers said, recalling his first ride on the Mean Streak at Cedar Point when the ride opened in 1991. “It was great. I’ve been riding it ever since.” During Cedar Point’s operating season, Sievers rides Mean Streak about 30 times a day, on average. Sometimes more, sometimes less. But when he says “riding,” consider adding the word religiously next to it. He has kept meticulous track of his rides over the decades. It’s a curious feat, and it has earned him the name “Mean Streak Henry.” There’s something about the coaster’s thrills and noises — the trains thundering by, the creaking of the wood frame — that continues to lure Sievers, day after day. He said he loves the view that Mean Streak offers of the lake and the amusement park. His love for coasters was ignited when he was a 12-year-old boy growing up in New York. At Eldridge Park, with his mom and dad by his side, he rode his first wooden coaster. If memory serves him right, it was smaller than Cedar Point’s Junior Gemini. “It was great,” Sievers said. Then, when he was visiting Geauga Lake in 1985, a chance conversation got him to visit Cedar Point. “Someone said I should check out this park called Cedar Point, that was about an hour away,” he said. “I’ve been coming ever since.” The first coaster he rode on his first visit: Gemini. “I rode it and rode it,” he said. Mean Streak came along a few years later, and a love affair was born. “I always see Mean Streak Henry,” Cedar Point general manager John Hildebrandt said. “He always has a smile on his face and he is always walking to the Mean Streak.” When Sievers retired in 2008 from his job as a custodial worker at Corning Community College, he and his wife started living at the local KOA campground six months out of the year. The arrangement gives him plenty of opportunity to visit Cedar Point several times each day during the summer. In the winters he and his wife return to their home in New York. Sievers could quite likely claim rights to a “Most Rides on Mean Streak” award, if such recognition existed. But the park doesn’t track any individual’s rides, Hildebrandt said. Ultimately, Mean Streak Henry is a living testament to mankind’s love of coasters — especially the ones at Cedar Point. “Cedar Point is an emotional experience,” Hildebrandt said. “(Guests) bond with certain rides.” Article by Sandusky Register.
SANDUSKY -- A Lake Erie legend is about to be silenced forever. The Disaster Transport indoor roller coaster at Cedar Point will make its final screech-filled run on Sunday, July 29.
The ride, which has been sittingnear the park's main entrance since opening in 1985, will be completely demolished and removed to make room fora new attraction set to be unchained in 2013. Park officialsannouncedDisaster Transport's closure back on July 13. Photos: Cedar Point closing Disaster Transport, Space Spiral The ride first made its debut as Avalanche Run -- an outdoor bobsled-style coaster. Then, in 1990, the ride was re-named Disaster Transport, enclosed and given a new outer space theme. The two-minuteride, which takes 10-person trains along the dark track at speeds up to 40 mph, has thrilled more than 30 million people since it was first unleashed. A "last ride celebration" will be held at 9 p.m. Sunday to use Disaster Transport's final day as a way to raise money for Give Kids The World. Registration for the party, which involved a $20 fee and $50 minimum donation, ended at noon Friday. As of Friday afternoon, more than $16,000 had been raised. Those at the party will be given a Disaster Transport T-shirt and a souvenir. The special eventwraps upwith an hour of exclusive ride time on Disaster Transport from 10:30-11:30 p.m. Those who raised the most money will have the privilege of choosing their seats on the last train while riding with the lights turned on. Disaster Trasnport will become the second roller coaster permanently closed at the Sandusky scream park this year.Prior to the 2012 season starting, Cedar Pointsent the WildCat roller coaster to its ride graveyard and removed ittocreate space for Luminosity, a new night-time show. In addition to Disaster Transport, the Space Spiral, a 330-foot rotating observation tower and icon of the park's skyline, will also be closed before the end of the 2012 season. It, too, will be demolished to make room for the new 2013attraction. Its final operating day has not yet been announced. Photos: Cedar Point debuts Luminosity As far as the new attraction for 2013, a leaked memo indicated it would be a wing-style roller coaster with the biggest drop, fastest speed and longest run of any similar ride. It would be the first roller coaster Cedar Point opens since they first debutedMaverick in 2007. Park spokesperson Annie Zelm said an official announcement about the 2013 attraction should come in mid August. Until then, the park has beenreleasing multiple teases about the upcoming attraction. Meanwhile, Kings Island, which is Cedar Point's sister park near Cincinnati, announced on Fridaythe permanent removal of the long-dormant Son of Beast wooden roller coaster. SANDUSKY, Ohio, April 13, 2012 — This summer, when the sun sets on another day of thrills at Cedar Point, guests will be treated to an entertainment encore that ignites all of their senses.
Cedar Point’s new live show, Luminosity, Powered by Pepsi, will transform the park’s Main Midway into a dance club aglow with flames, lasers and more than 1 million lights that extend beyond the stage, illuminating rides and buildings. Luminosity will take the stage with a grand opening on Friday, June 8, igniting the night through Sunday, Aug. 19. Guests can experience the magic before then as the show unofficially starts Friday, June 1. “Cedar Point is a magical place on a summer night, and Luminosity is going to treat our guests to a very special nighttime experience,” said John Hildebrandt, Vice President and General Manager of the park. “Luminosity will be many things: midway and ride lights, music, singing and dancing on a 75-foot stage, pyrotechnics, video and a few surprises — but it will also be a way for families to connect at the end of the day and create new memories of their visit to the park.” “We believe all our rides and shows are special, but the real joy comes from sharing those experiences with family and friends.” This conceptual artist rendering shows the Luminosity stage, where 30 talented performers will entertain guests as special effects light up the night at Cedar Point. (Cedar Point) Each day at dusk, the park will begin to glow with enhanced lighting on the Giant Wheel, Power Tower and Millennium Force, as well as along the Main Midway. At the new Celebration Plaza in front of the Iron Dragon roller coaster, more than two dozen dancers, singers, drummers and other performers will accompany guests on a multi-sensory adventure. Onstage with a backdrop rising nearly 25 feet, performers will journey by land, under the sea and through space, with eye-catching costume changes and scenery that unfolds throughout the show to set the mood. They’ll twist and twirl to the tune of dynamic pop favorites, firing up the crowd. The adventure culminates in an explosion of fireworks and pyrotechnics that will light up the sky. While guests are riding high on a wave of excitement, a DJ will crank up the dance hits and take requests. Pulsating rhythms from top performers such as Jennifer Lopez, Pitbull and Britney Spears will coax even the most reluctant dancers from the sidelines. They’ll take a cue from flash mobs that will make surprise appearances throughout the day to give guests a glimpse of what’s to come. Another DJ stationed in front of the Cedar Point Ballroom will invite families to join the party along the midway. It’s the perfect way to continue celebrating together after an action-packed day at the park. “It’s very much an all-encompassing experience,” said Charles Bradshaw, Corporate Vice President of live entertainment. “There will be many technical accents and special effects, combined with concert-style music and 30 talented performers that really connect with the audience in a close setting. We want them to feel like they’re part of the excitement.” Luminosity is one of many ways Cedar Point is connecting people through thrills, in addition to its 17 roller coasters, award-winning entertainment and resort accommodations. Watch a preview of the show atluminosity.cedarpoint.com. Cedar Point opens for the summer on Saturday, May 12 and will be open daily through Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 3, 2012 and Friday through Sunday through Oct. 28. Cedar Point has announced that it will introduce WindSeeker, a 30-story-tall swing ride to the Sandusky, Ohio, amusement park/resort for next summer. WindSeeker will tower above everything around its location on the beach, rising almost as high as the Millennium Force roller coaster’s giant first hill. In the early 1900s, the Cedar Point Beach was a hub of activity as families played in the sand or frolicked in the lake. One of its most popular attractions was the Sea Swings that would dip riders into the cool waters of Lake Erie as it spun in a circular motion. Now 100 years later, Cedar Point will add a 21st century version of that thrilling ride to the park for next summer. The new WindSeeker will be a 301-foot-tall tower that will spin riders nearly 30 stories above the Lake Erie shoreline. Seated in two-person swings that will allow their feet to dangle, riders will slowly begin rotating in a circular motion as the swings ascend the tower. At the top, the swings will be reaching speeds between 25-30 mph, flaring out almost 45 degrees from the tower. WindSeeker will be able to accommodate 64 riders (32 swings) at one time. “Spinning almost 300 feet above Lake Erie and the Cedar Point Beach will be a very exciting ride experience for our guests,” said John Hildebrandt, the vice president and general manager of Cedar Point. “Day or night, WindSeeker will provide riders with dramatic views of the park and the Cedar Point Peninsula. It will be an extremely popular addition to Cedar Point.” In comparison to other Cedar Point rides, WindSeeker will climb nearly two stories higher than the cabin on the park’s Space Spiral observation ride and is only a few feet shorter than the first hill on Millennium Force. Another swing ride, the Wave Swinger that opened in Frontiertown in 1979, is 31 feet tall and has a top speed of approximately 9 mph.
The ride is manufactured by Mondial, a 23-year-old Dutch-based company. WindSeeker will cost approximately $5 million to build. Riders must be at least 48 inches tall and will be secured with individual over-the-head lap bars with interlocking seat belt. Overall, Cedar Point will add more than $6 million in capital improvements to the park for 2011. Photos by Cedar Point SANDUSKY - The Cedar Point attraction once known for being the longest hydro-flume ride in the world is nearing the end. White Water Landing will be removed from the park after the season ends Oct. 30. Although there are no plans for the space, "it's valuable land for potential future improvements," park spokesman Bryan Edwards said Thursday. White Water Landing is in the rear of the park, between the Mean Streak and the Antique Cars rides. Built in 1982, White Water Landings simulates a wild river ride, according to a Cedar Point press release. When it opened it was the longest hydro-flume ride in the world. Edward said the ride's waning popularity was another reason to remove it. "We don't like to take rides out of the park," he said. "We really like our ride and roller coaster collection, but we might have something better to put in area, or use it for something else." In 24 seasons, White Water Landing has given more than 28 million rides. In August, Cedar Point announced it also wanted to get rid of the Demon Drop, off of the Main Midway in the front of the park. Edwards said the free-fall ride hasn't been sold yet, although the park has been talking to a couple of interested people. The Demon Drop will remain at the park next season if it isn't sold. Cedar Point is also removing the Demon Drop to make room for improvement projects, but nothing is planned. Edwards didn't know if Cedar Point was going to try to sell White Water Landing. Sandusky, OH – Cedar Point will give guests a "double whammy" - focusing on both thrills and family - when it debuts the world's tallest and fastest "double-twisting" impulse roller coaster and a PEANUTS ice show for its 2002 season. These new attractions will represent a $13 million capital investment project at the famed amusement park/resort for the upcoming season.
THE COASTER: Named Wicked Twister, the 215-foot-tall, 72-mph steel roller coaster will launch riders into a new dimension of thrills and will be Cedar Point's 15th roller coaster, enabling the park to break its own world record for having more coasters than anywhere on Earth. A "double-twisting" impulse roller coaster, Wicked Twister will use the advanced technology of linear induction motors (LIM) to rocket riders out of the coaster's station - at a maximum speed of 72 mph in 2.5 seconds! - propelling forward and backward and up and down a U-shaped track with spiraling 450-degree corkscrews atop each vertical 215-foot-tall tower. With "twists" on both towers - instead of just one - Wicked Twister will be the first and only coaster of its kind anywhere in the world. With its train suspended from below its track, Wicked Twister will challenge passengers immediately by launching halfway up the first 90-degree 215-foot-tall tower before briefly pausing, reversing direction and accelerating into the station where it will be thrust nearly all the way up the second 90-degree 215-foot-tall tower. The coaster will be launched out of the station five times - three forward and two backward - while reaching the apex of each tower on the U-shaped track as it picks up speed through the LIM propulsion system. Riders will face the sky while rotating up the twisting towers and will face the ground while rotating backward in the opposite direction, creating a unique visual illusion of the ground rotating below. With the addition of Wicked Twister, Cedar Point will be the only amusement park in the world to stake claim to having three roller coasters above 200 feet tall: the 205-foot-tall Magnum XL-200 (1989); the 310-foot-tall Millennium Force (2000) and now the 215-foot-tall Wicked Twister. This twisted scream machine will also be the eighth world-record-breaking ride Cedar Point has introduced since debuting the world-renowned Magnum XL-200 roller coaster in 1989. Plus, Wicked Twister will be the eighth roller coaster the park has added during this same time period. Located on the east side of the Cedar Point Peninsula, along the park's historic beach and stretching on both sides of the Giant Wheel, Wicked Twister will have a two-tone structure, blending a sunburst yellow track with bright teal columns. Wicked Twister's train will be a mixture of blue, magenta, teal and yellow. The ride will use a 32-person train consisting of eight four-passenger cars and will have a ride capacity of approximately 1,000 riders per hour. Each seat will have an individual shoulder restraint and restraining belt. The roller coaster engineering and manufacturing firm, Intamin, headquartered in Wollerau, Switzerland, is the creator of the "double-twisting" impulse coaster concept. Guests will be able to take their first Wicked Twister ride when Cedar Point opens for the 2002 season in May. THE PEANUTS ICE SHOW: Good Grief! Cedar Point will introduce guests to the world's only skating beagle when it debuts "Snoopy Rocks! On Ice," an elaborate ice show hosted by the park's "top dog" himself and also featuring four other popular PEANUTS characters - Charlie Brown, Lucy, Linus and Sally. A cast of professional ice skaters will complete the dazzling ensemble and will showcase entertaining skating elements with artistry and technical wizardry. "Snoopy Rocks! On Ice" will feature several favorite PEANUTS classics - on ice - such as Snoopy battling the Red Baron, Charlie Brown's infamous kite-eating tree, Lucy's five-cent psychiatric advice and the Great Pumpkin Patch. The dramatic grand finale will highlight a high-energy skating number with the entire cast at "Club Snoopy," a groovy ice disco. Throughout the 30-minute ice spectacular, guests will be wowed by lavish sets, detailed props and colorful costumes, along with an upbeat musical score, including everything from rock 'n' roll to hip hop. This PEANUTS ice extravaganza will be located in the former Cedar Point Cinema, which housed the IMAX film presentations at the park since 1975. Renamed the Good Time Theatre, the 900-seat theater will be climate controlled and its stage will be renovated into a giant ice platform. The Good Time Theatre is sponsored by FirstEnergy, the official energy supplier of Cedar Point. Co-produced by Cedar Point's sister park, Knott's Berry Farm in Buena Park, Calif., and Woodstock Ice Productions, Inc. in Santa Monica, Calif., which is headed by Jill Schulz, daughter of the late Charles M. Schulz, and managed by Cedar Point's live entertainment department, "Snoopy Rocks! On Ice" will debut in mid-June and will be presented through Labor Day, Sept. 2. Karen Kresge, who worked with Charles M. Schulz for 21 years and is the resident choreographer of Schulz's Redwood Ice Arena in Santa Rosa, Calif., will be the principal director-choreographer of Cedar Point's "Snoopy Rocks! On Ice." "The 2002 season will be an exciting time at Cedar Point - for both thrill-seekers and families," says Daniel Keller, vice president and general manager of Cedar Point. "As our 15th coaster, Wicked Twister will reinforce Cedar Point's reputation as the world's roller coaster capital, while 'Snoopy Rocks! On Ice' will win over audiences with a brand new type of family entertainment." Construction of Wicked Twister and the production of "Snoopy Rocks! On Ice" are currently under way and will continue throughout the winter. For frequent updates, log on to cedarpoint.com. |
